Stars are sky objects that emit light. According to astronomy the
definition of a star is "All massive objects (ranging from 0.008 to 200
solar masses) which are and have ever carried out the generation of energy
through nuclear fusion". There are two types of stars, namely false stars
and real stars. Fake stars are stars that do not produce their own light but
reflect light received from other stars. Whereas real stars are stars that can
produce their own light.
The closest star to Earth is the Sun at a distance of about 149,680,000
kilometers and followed by Proxima Centauri in the constellation Centaurus
which is about four light years away. The stars have become a part of many
cultures, for example such as stars for religious practices, farming, and
making Gregorian calendars that are almost used throughout the world. Because
the distance is very far from the earth, the stars only look like dots that
flicker when seen with the naked eye.
Here are the types of stars close to the sun, including:
• Alpha Centauri
Alpha Centauri also known as Rigil Kentaurus is the brightest star in the
Centaurus constellation. Although it looks like a single point seen with the
naked eye, this star actually has three star components. Among others; Alpha
Centauri A (α Cen A), Alpha Centauri B (α Cen B) the third component is called
Proxima Centauri (α Cen C). Alpha Centauri is the closest star system of our
Earth, with a range of 4.2 to 4.4 light years.
• Barnard star
The Barnard star is a red dwarf star that has a very small mass. Located
about 6 million light years from Earth. This star is the closest star located
in the constellation of Ophiuchus, and the closest fourth star of the Sun,
after all three Star components in the Alpha Centauri system.
• Wolf 359
Wolf 359 is a red dwarf star located in the constellation Leo, near the
ecliptic. It is around 7.8 light years from Earth, and has an apparent
magnitude of 13.5 and can only be seen with large telescopes. Wolf 359 is one
of the closest stars to our solar system, after Alpha Centauri, Proxima
Centauri, and Barnard star. Its proximity to Earth causes many of these Stars
to be mentioned in some works of fiction.
• Lalande 21185
Lalande 21185 is a small red star in the constellation Ursa Major. It is
around 8.3 light years from Earth. Although relatively close, however, it is
too dim to be seen with the naked eye. In about 19,900 years, Lalande 21185
will be at the closest distance of around 4.65 ly (1.43 pc) from the Sun.
• Sirius
Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky located in the
constellation Canis Major. Sirius can be seen almost everywhere on the surface
of the Earth except by people who live at latitudes above 73,284 ° north.
Sirius is one of the closest star systems to Earth at a distance of 2.6 parsec or
8.6 light years.
