The rose is a type of flowering shrub.
Its name comes from the Latin word Rosa. The flowers of the rose
grow in many different colors, from the well-known red rose or yellow roses and
sometimes white or purple roses. Roses belong to the family of plants called Rosaceae.
All roses were originally wild and they come from several parts of the
world, North America, Europe,
northwest Africa and
many parts of Asia
and Oceania.
There are over 100 different species of
roses. The wild rose species can be grown in gardens, but most garden roses
are cultivars,
which have been chosen by people. Over hundreds of years they have been
specially bred to produce a wide variety of growing habits and a broad range of
colors from dark red to white including as well yellow and a bluish/lilac color.
Many roses have a strong, pleasant scent. Most roses have prickles (incorrectly
called thorns) on their stems.
Rose bushes are able to tolerate a wide variety of growing conditions. The
fruit of the rose is called a hip. Some roses have
decorative hips. Roses are widely used across the world as symbols of
love, sympathy or sorrow.
Anatomy
In
general, rose grows in cool air areas. The height of the tree can grow to reach
2 to 5 meters. However, there are also those that can grow to reach 20 meters
by propagating to other plants.
If
you are curious about the structure of this plant, try to look at the
information below.
- Leaf
Rose has
compound leaves, in the sense that one stalk consists of several leaves. For
modern roses, it usually has five leaves for each stalk ranging in size from 5
to 15 cm. Whereas in garden roses, the number of leaves in each stalk can be
more, which can be seven, nine, or more. In the upper leaflet, called the
leaflet terminal, it is located attached to the leaf stalk. For other leaflets
that have stems called petioles. The base of the leaf which has leaves like
wings is known as stipule and the stipule tip is commonly known as the earlobe.
- Thorns
One of the characteristics of a rose is
having a thorn shaped like a hook. These spines actually have different
functions from each species. In the types of rose plants that propagate,
these spines are useful as hooks or handles when penetrating other plants
around it. For modern types developed in greenhouses or flower gardens, these
spines function so that no predatory animals enter the greenhouse or flower
garden.
Crowns
of roses consist of several petals, where the number will determine whether the
roses are classified as single, semi-double, double, or very double flowers. A
single flower only has one row of petals with a number of 5 to 12 petals. For
those that include semi-double classifications, the number of petals is 13-25
in two or three lines. Petals with more than 25 in three rows or more belong to
the double classification. And those with 45 to 50 petals in many rows belong
to a very double classification.
- Stamen and Pistil
This
flower will bloom from buds which are initially covered by green leaves such as
a sheath known as sepals or leaves that change shape into petals. When the rose
is fully bloomed, thin filaments or stamens will be seen in the middle. Stamen
is a reproductive part of male flowers. He will release pollen from the end
called the sari. As for the female part, the pistil is located in the center of
the stamens.
