Mars is the fourth closest planet from the Sun. His name was taken from
the Roman god of war, Mars. The planet is dubbed the red planet because of its
reddish color from afar. The reddish color of the planet Mars occurs because of
the presence of iron oxide on the surface of the planet Mars. On the surface of
Mars there are craters, volcanoes, valleys, deserts and ice caps. Mars is a
planet of rock with a thin atmosphere.
The Martian environment is friendlier to human life than Venus. But the
situation is not ideal enough for humans to live in. The temperature and air
pressure on Mars are quite low coupled with the composition of air which most
carbon dioxide makes humans have to use respiratory aids if they want to live
on Mars. This planet has two satellites namely Phobos and Deimos. Mars orbits
for 687 days around the Sun and rotates 25.62 hours.
Mars has a radius of about half the radius of the Earth. The planet is
less dense compared to Earth, and only has about 15% volume and 11% of Earth's
mass. Its surface area is smaller than the number of dry areas on Earth. Mars
is bigger than Mercury, but Mercury is denser. On Mars, there is a unique
feature in the Cydonia Mensae area. This appearance is a hill which when seen
from above appears as a human face. Many people think of it as evidence of a
civilization that has long been destroyed on Mars, although in the present, it
has been proven that this appearance is just an ordinary natural appearance.
